Boxing Day Fund Raising Success

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Boxing Day, and contributed towards our charity collections.

We now know the total raised was a whopping £734.66.

Our greatest thanks goes to Skinners brewery who provided us with a barrel of Betty Stoggs (central to the fundraising activity!).

Add funds are being sent to the Trust Fund set up by Oakham RFC – full details here.

And it has emerged we have a connection to Oakham as Roger Grove’s wife Pat’s son Andy Raine and Grandson Tom are members of Oakham.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed and helped out.

Helston 50 – Roseland 12

Helston prove too strong

On Saturday afternoon Roseland travelled down to Helston for the third fixture of their Cornwall One campaign in almost perfect rugby conditions.

Having put in two massive performances at home and coming away with a loss and a win Roseland were hoping to carry the momentum into a tough clash against Helston. Over the years the pair have shared the spoils of victory fairly evenly. Roseland held the current advantage with a big 50-7 win at Philleigh pre-Christmas. [Read more…]

Roseland 18 – Camborne School of Mines 7

Roseland beat Students

On a dry but blustery afternoon on Saturday Roseland had the joy of another home fixture albeit against Camborne School of Mines (CSM). However Roseland, despite losing last week, were in confident mood after an impressive performance against Newquay.

Although in the pre-Christmas fixture between these two at Penryn, CSM came out on top so once again Roseland were looking for a first victory over CSM for a number of seasons. [Read more…]

Roseland lose thriller: Roseland 10 – Newquay 29

The first Saturday of 2017 saw the start of the new Tribute Cornwall One league campaign.

Having used September to December to determine which teams competed in Cornwall One and Two the start of the New Year was being highly anticipated by everyone.

Roseland had traveled to Newquay in early December and suffered a heavy defeat so were looking to put in a better showing on their own paddock.

Newquay kicked off the game playing down the slope and with the assistance of the slight breeze.

This was also the first game for both teams playing with World Rugby’s new directive on the punishment of “high tackles”.

The early exchanges were fairly even with both sides probing and running hard and being committed in defence.

The first meaningful act came as a result of the new directive. Roseland centre Mike “Legs” Rushbridge fell foul of the new sanctions and picked up a yellow card for a tackle that slid up above the shoulders. From the resultant penalty in the 22 Newquay tapped and went and scored under the posts after a simple dummy and missed tackle.

The score was converted and Newquay led 7-0.

The match was a real battle royale with neither side prepared to give an inch. There was some excellent breaks and excellent moments of defence from both sides. Newquay were also to fall foul of the referee and their centre picked up a yellow card for an arm around the neck during a ruck.

Unfortunately for Roseland the next score came from Newquay when they kicked a simple penalty to lead 10-0.

Both sides were soon back to a full compliment of players and the half rumbled on. Roseland turned the ball over deep inside their own half and spread the ball wide and skipper Andrew “Starky” Stark put in a lung bursting 50m run to bring his side up to the Newquay 22. The ball was well recycled and with the Newquay defence in arrears scrum half Tom “Dayer” Day spotted a gap down the blind side and scampered over from the 22 for a well earnt team try. Fly Half Davo Williams converted and the score was 10-7 and the half time whistle blew.

The second half was very much like the first with both sides going hammer and tong at each other and neither side prepared to give an inch.

Roseland worked their way deep into the Newquay 22 and won a scrum 5m from the try line. The scrums had been fairly even all game but this scrum the Roseland 8 got the upper hand and shunted the Newquay 8 back and were just about to get the ball over the line when the ref gave a hard sharp blow on his whistle. It appears that 2 opposing flankers had been exchanging pleasantries with each other and the ref, who was taking no prisoners, blew up and warned the the Roseland flanker for holding his opposite number but yellow carded the Newquay flanker for throwing punches.

From the penalty Roseland opted to scrum but unfortunately couldn’t replicate the previous scrum and although retained possession after several more phases had to settle for a penalty which Davo converted to level the scores at 10-10.

The game stayed level for the majority of the half with both sides determined to win.

With about 65/70 minutes up on the clock and both sides with a full 15 Newquay grabbed a vital try after a barnstorming break from their prop. The ball was recycled and they scored 15m in on the right of the posts. The conversion was good at it was 17-10. Roseland determined not to be undone battled back but struggled to break the resolute Newquay defence.

Roseland were to end the match with 14 players when full back Sammy Glanville picked up a yellow for an arm around the neck in a maul.

With about 8 minutes to go and Roseland down to 14 Newquay capitalised and scored a further 2 late tries and converted one to secure the try bonus point and the victory and crush Roseland.

For 65/70 minutes the game was nip and tuck. Both sides were unwilling to give an inch and the all 3 results were still on the table but in the end Newquays slightly superior fitness and rugby nous and experience in higher league rugby probably got them over the line.

Roseland should take huge heart from the contest and if they perform like this every week, with more players still due back from injury and other commitments, then they will do well in Cornwall One but it’s going to be 13 weeks of huge commitment and hard work and effort from everyone for one of the smallest clubs in Cornwall.

Mike Harding

Mike Harding was a playing member of Roseland Rugby Club between 1975 and 1980 when he emigrated to Australia. He made some good friends in his playing days. Being very much a community club I know that many former players from that era are still in touch and actively supporting it.

As you may know Mike tragically passed away on 6/10/2016. His funeral was held in Noosa Australia on 21st November.

By popular request, I am trying to organise a celebration of his life for those who could not make the funeral especially the people he left behind here in UK.

To that end I have booked Truro Golf Club on Saturday 28th January 2017 from 2.30. It would be great if you could join us.

It is intended to be an informal affair whereby we can all share memories, anecdotes and tributes.

What I would like is for you to come along and, if you wish to, maybe provide a tribute or anecdote to share with us.

We also plan to have a buffet to round off the afternoon.

I need an idea of numbers for catering purposes. So please contact me to let me know if you can come along.

There will be refreshments available throughout the afternoon.

Finally, please can you mention this to anyone who knew Mike and ask them to contact me via phone, facebook or e-mail.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kevin Harding.

2017 Fixtures now here

Great news is that we’re competing in Cornwall 1 – well done lads!

Good news is that the first two games are at home – so see you at Philleigh on Saturday…

Newquay 45 – Roseland 7

On a blustery day at the Newquay Sports Centre Roseland travelled to Newquay for the penultimate game of the first half of the season. They arrived with a bare 15, including 6 front row players in the pack, a lock and a hooker as flankers and a back 3 who have played only a handful of games between them.

During the morning on the Roseland there had been a constant heavy downfall of rain but once arriving at Newquay there appeared to of been very little rain but plenty of wind that was blowing straight down the pitch from the sports centre. The wind was going to be a key factor in the game.

Roseland received the kick off playing into the wind. The first half was going to be a case of up the jumper rugby for Roseland. Unfortunately for the makeshift Roseland team they struggled to retain possession of the ball for long periods and in the opening 20 minutes conceded 5 tries and several conversions. During the middle of the half Roseland both managed to string together several phases of play and kept Newquay at bay from their own line. A factor throughout the whole game that Roseland could be pleased with was how well the scrum operated, constantly shoving Newquay backwards and winning a few against the head. Towards the end of the first half Newquay grabbed a couple of extra converted scores to bring the score to 45-0 at half time.

The second half brought about a change in the flow of the game. Roseland started to to be able to put Newquay under pressure by using the advantage of the strong wind and keeping Newquay pinned by deep in their own half.

With Roseland’s tails up and determined to come away with points they forced Newquay into an error and from the dropped ball centre Simon Strong hacked the ball on and won the foot race to score a well deserved Roseland try. Fly half Matt Eddy converted.

This was to be the end of the scoring for both sides despite both making forays into each other’s 22’s and also Eddy having a drop goal attempt just drift wide of the posts.

Roseland took a lot of confidence from the second half and theoretically won it 7-0. All 15 players that turned up and played put in a massive shift and done the Roseland shirt proud.

Next week Roseland complete the first half of league fixtures by entertaining Stithians at Philleigh (2:30 kick off) in their final match before Christmas. (please wear your Christmas jumpers…) It’s a huge fixture for Roseland as both them and Helston are on 32 points and Perranporth are on 30 and Helston entertain Perranporth on the same day.

Their are several different outcomes on who plays Cornwall One or Two rugby next year on the outcome of those two fixtures.

If Roseland win they get Cornwall 1 regardless of the other outcome.

I’ve just tried writing up all the other outcomes but there a bit to numerous so let’s just hope for a Roseland win.

Boxing Day at Home vs Truro this year

This year the annual boxing day game against Truro RFC will be played at Roseland’s Philleigh game.

Kick off is 12.30pm.

In addition to the usual festivities we’ll be taking advantage of the event to raise money for the Trust Fund that has been set up by Oakham RFC after the tragic death of their player Savenaca Koroibulileka (aka Tu) during a match earlier this year.

“The cause of his death, not being Rugby related, means that, unfortunately, there is no insurance pay-out from the RFU’s insurers. Tu, a great family man as well as a true Rugby man, leaves behind a widow and 4 young sons – all of whom, sadly, were watching the game. We have now been able to set up a Trust Fund to help his family until the boys, one by one, have reached the age of 18. All donations, whatever the size, will be gratefully received and faithfully applied.
In anticipation I will thank you for your support in whatever form it comes.
Yours in Rugby, Steve Beanland, President ORFC

All proceeds from the ground collection, and meat raffle will be donated.

Plus, we’ll be running a bar at the pitch during the game from which all takings will also be donated.
