50th Anniversary Celebrations

This season Roseland Rugby Club will be celebrating 50 years of playing rugby on the Roseland and of representing our area in the world of rugby. The Club has travelled to all parts of Cornwall and has toured widely in the UK and Europe. It all started with a chat in the King’s Head in Ruan Lanihorne way back in 1971. We are planning a year of activities to mark this auspicious milestone. A milestone that was inconceivable to those imaginative, inspired and ambitious guys who met that day. Much has happened since then with many peaks and troughs and a few very perilous moments. However, the Club has survived and literally hundreds of players have enjoyed the pleasures and pains of playing rugby for  Roseland RFC. Once you have pulled on the navy and scarlet shirt you become a member of a family that provides life-long relationships and friendships.

The first of our celebratory events is a PAST-PLAYERS’ AND SPONSORS’ DAY on 30th October. We are hosting our long-standing rivals Lankelly Fowey at Philleigh, kick-off 3.00pm, in a Cornwall League One game. There will be a beer tent and a bouncy castle. Wives, girlfriends and children will be very welcome. There will also be food at the excellent Roseland Inn afterwards. We hope to have really great day of rugby, good memories and the renewal of friendships stretching back half a century. Please make a diary note and come along. It will be a long time before we repeat it!

Other dates  to note are:

March 18th-20th 2022:  Tour to Weston-Super-Mare (our first ever tour venue)

April 9th 2022:     Celebratory Dinner at the Alverton Hotel in Truro

April 24th 2022:   Charity game versus Bolingey Barbarians at Philleigh.

50th Anniversary Book

There are numerous stories told of the Club and its members so as a valuable record of the last 50 years Roger Grove is going to compile a written and photographic account, in book form.

Roger is asking for “everyone who would like to, to contribute something in writing, either a couple of sentences or even a page or two, on happenings to yourself or others in the rugby context, amusing stories, proud moments or simply what Roseland RFC means to you. We are all aware of what a privilege it is to be a member of this ‘band of brothers’ … and sisters! Please would you commit your thoughts to paper to become part of our rugby story. Every contribution, no matter how small, will be included and will be there for folk to enjoy in the future.”

The target is to produce the book to be distributed at the Celebration Dinner on 9th April 2022 and be available thereafter. Please send your contribution to Roger Grove at Fieldways, Veryan, Truro, TR2 5QA or email rgrove123@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01872 501479, as soon as possible, to give Roger sufficient time for compilation. Please remember “what goes on tour, stays on tour!”.

Game versus Lankelly

The game this Saturday (21st August) against Lankelly has been cancelled because of a positive Covid test. We hope that we will eventually start the season with the game against Helston on Saturday 4th September at Helston.

The AGM due to be held on Tuesday 24th August is postponed until further notice.

Roseland versus Veor ….

Unfortunately the game scheduled for Saturday 14th at Philleigh has been cancelled due to a positive Covid test among the Veor squad. We now look forward to the game against Lankelly at Fowey on Saturday 21st.

Welcome Back!

Here’s hoping you have survived these strange and difficult times with your sanity and spirit intact.

Rugby at the community level is back after a long absence. The boys are training for the start of the League season on September 4th. The game is against Helston away. Before that we have two warm-up games against Veor Reserves on Saturday 14th August at Philleigh (K.O. 3pm) and against Lankelly on Saturday 21st August away (K.O. 3pm).

This season we are playing in Cornwall League One on a home and away basis against Bodmin, St. Agnes, Lankelly-Fowey, Camborne School of Mines, Helston and Illogan Park. After Christmas there will be a Cup competition played in pools based upon the League positions at the year end. Club Captain for the season is Ed (Jellybean) Llewellyn. Congratulations Ed!

You will find the full fixture list and other up-dated information as it becomes available elsewhere on the site.

The coming season will also see the Club celebrating our 50th year. We are planning a year of activities to mark this auspicious milestone. A milestone that was inconceivable to those imaginative, inspired and ambitious guys who met at the King’s Head, Ruan Lanihorne way back in 1971. Much has happened since then with many peaks and troughs and a few very perilous moments. However the Club has survived and literally hundreds of players have enjoyed the joys and pains of playing rugby in the Roseland and across Cornwall (and occasionally Devon). More information about our plans to celebrate will be posted soon.

New 15-a-side adapted game……

Together with the lifting of lockdown on Wednesday 2nd December, the RFU announced that we shall immediately move to Stage E along the Return to Rugby Roadmap and that an adapted version of the 15-a-side is to be introduced.
Rather than explain all, chapter and verse, please refer to www.englandrugby.com for detailed information for news regarding the adapted game, relevant dates and all the latest guidance where there is plenty of explanatory reading material.
As a club, while currently seeking to respectfully canvas the individual views, wishes and opinions of all players, we have decided to recommence training on Tuesday 5th January followed hopefully by arranging friendly fixtures from either the end of January or early February.
This, of course, will ultimately be driven by Government regulations/guidelines and player appetite.
In the meantime we hope that all members and their families remain safe and healthy and wish everybody a Merry Christmas while hoping that 2021 is a better year for us all.

A New Chapter Begins…

“pre season” training, Saturday 5th September, 2.30pm, Philleigh

As life very slowly begins to get back to normal, so does the rugby season. The RFU have now moved community rugby on to stage D of the ‘return to rugby community roadmap’.

This means that clubs are now able to organise non-contact fixtures with other clubs using Ready4Rugby and other touch rugby activity. Limited and restricted contact rugby training is also now allowed. Varied training conditions will allow the return of tackling, lineouts and rucks, ensuring that players are prepared to perform these skills safely and effectively with some restrictions. Mauls, scrums, opposed lineouts or upright tackles are still not permissible as the transmission exposure risk remains high. Contact training sessions have to be carried out in small groups of no more than six players.

The league season for level 3 clubs and below will not start until November at the very earliest and the next announcement regarding this will be on 2nd October

Social distancing and other extra precautionary measures will be in place where applicable but all players new or old are welcome to come and join. See you there!

Club Captain

Further to last month’s announcement that there was to be no AGM this year, just one new nomination was received for any Club Officer/Committee position.

Alex Benbow was nominated for the position of Club Captain – proposed by Joe Davidson and seconded by Ant Thomas.  With no other nominations received, approval of the Committee and Ant being prepared to give up the captaincy role, Alex is duly elected.

While congratulating Alex upon his appointment, the club would like to express sincere thanks to Ant for his undoubted efforts and commitment over the past two seasons. Moving forward in these difficult times, we now need to get behind and support Alex In his new role as we all work towards getting back to playing rugby, hopefully in the not too distant future.

50th Anniversary Year

As many players, VP’s, sponsors and other members are doubtless aware, the forthcoming 2020/21 season is the 50th Anniversary Season for Roseland RFC.
However, having taken account of the so many extraordinary challenges that lie ahead, not least being that we really don’t know when Community Club Rugby will be allowed to meaningfully recommence, the Committee has taken an early decision to postpone all 50th Anniversary celebrations until the 2021/22 season.   Having experienced difficultly in trying to make some very basic arrangements, we agreed that we should concentrate all our efforts on dealing with the many COVID 19 related issues which will doubtless challenge our resources.
Our 50th Anniversary is very important to us all and, as disappointed as we are to postpone, this decision has been made in the best interests of safety to our members.   So, in effect, we shall be celebrating 50 completed years as opposed to our 50th season, something we still intend to do with great style once life has hopefully returned to something closer to normal.

AGM

Our Annual General Meeting is due to take place on Tuesday 30th June but obviously we can’t proceed with this normally as planned.  Although more senior clubs with suitable resources are conducting an AGM by video conferencing, this is unfortunately not feasible for ourselves and our AGM has regrettably had to be cancelled.   Upon the basis of no AGM, our Committee has decided that it is best that Club Officers and Committee personnel should remain unchanged unless either, any individual doesn’t wish to continue in the current role or that somebody new wishes to be nominated.   To be clear, this doesn’t necessarily mean that there can’t be changes and nominations need to be sent by email to N.Sylvester@hotmail.co.uk. by Tuesday 23rd June.   Any nominations must have consent of the nominee together with names of a Proposer and Seconder – all must be current club members. In the event that any voting becomes a necessity, we shall devise a suitable method.
There is currently one vacancy within “Other Committee” – although no requirement to fill this position, it is preferable that any nominee is a current player.
