Roseland Defeat Brewers

Roseland 40 – Perranporth 15

Saturday afternoon saw perfect rugby conditions with both the weather and the condition on the pitch, special thanks to Ben Taylor and Shaun Eamers on the pitch. It was also Roselands Ladies and Family Day with plenty of wives, girlfriend and children on the sidelines.

Roseland welcomed Perranporth to Philleigh in what is historically a hard fought and close game. Perranporth have held the edge recently over Roseland. Roseland were looking to carry on from last weeks excellent victory away to Lankelly Fowey with another win at home.

Perranporth kicked the game off playing down the slope but against the slight breeze. As ever the early exchanges were pretty even. Roseland eventually got into the lead with two well taken tries by scrum half Will Rundle and winger Andy Harris. Both were converted by fly half Matt Eddy.
If Roseland thought they were then going to run away with the game Perranporth to their credit didn’t allow that to happen and battled back strongly for the remainder of the half and were rewarded with an unconverted try to see the half time score of 14-5.

Despite the slim scoreboard advantage and playing down the slope second half Roseland knew they couldn’t rest on their laurels.

An early score to settle any nerves was vital and Roseland managed this with a well taken first try for winger Baden Widdows this was converted by Eddy. Roseland grew into the ascendancy and started to dominate at the breakdown, a first half weakness, and were beginning to puncture holes in a determined but albeit tiring Perranporth defence. Further tries followed for flanker Tommy Whiles, fly half Matt Eddy and a second for Baden Widdows. One of these was converted by Eddy and one by full back Tom Day. Perranporth to their credit never gave up and battled for the full 80 minutes and during the second half were rewarded with a further two unconverted tries of their own to bring the final score to 40-15.

Saturday also saw the start of the 1ssac Tour (cycling Lands End to John O’Groats on the sustrans network) for Roselands vice chairman and life member Chris Thomas and head coach Andy Day.
They set off from Lands End at 9:30 and arrived at Philleigh around 15:30. This was the first day of 23.
After the game the two cyclists posed with the team for photos and all the money raised from the pitch collection and the raffle will be distributed between their three chosen charities (Cornwall Air Ambulance, British Heart Foundation and UNICEF UK).
